Pre-game Thoughts vs. Titans

I want to start this blog off by saying I am excited to return to CenturyLink and play in front of our 12’s on Sunday! We have just completed what is arguably the toughest five game stretch on our schedule this year. Our first five games had us on the road 3 out of the 5 weekends, playing teams that are currently first, third, and fifth in total defense. I am very happy with the team and the resilience we have shown up to this point in the season. The future of this team is very bright - as we continue to return key players back to health and progress fundamentally.

Last week was a dog fight, and, unfortunately, we did not come out on top. There are a few things we took away from that game and focused on improving this week. The key to success is to focus on maintaining a winning attitude, learning from your mistakes, and moving on. The Titans are a very good team with a lot of speed so we have to flush last week and focus on ways to contain their aggressive style of play. From an offensive standpoint, I am very excited about the progress our front line has made throughout this season. One of the main additions this week is the return of veteran center, Max Unger. As one of our team leaders, Max is a big part of what we do up front. He makes the right calls and helps the rest of the line with their pick-ups. These calls and pick-ups will only improve Russell’s pocket time and allow him to get in rhythm with our receiving core.

This week has been a busy one on the defensive side of the ball. One Titan strength is their successful third downs because of their aggressive attitude and constant pressure they put on the defense. Our goal this week is to win the third down battles and get the ball back in the hands of our offense. Chris Johnson is a very talented back that poses a threat in both their run and passing game. We need to do a good job of securing initial contact with him in order to quiet his presence. We have centered this week’s focus on defensive communication, and pressure coverage. After going over last week’s game film, we noted our mistakes and how they were made. Constant communication allows a defense to stay on the same page and we intend to clean up the lack of it on our end.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is a very good quarterback who has distributed the ball well this year. As a secondary, we try to maintain our energies on offensive routes and tendencies which allows us to improve our reads, and tighten up throwing windows. This effort will play a major role in our ability to limit their passing game. This week is going to be a battle but I am looking forward to playing at the Clink again and putting on a show for our 12’s! Sunday’s game presents an opportunity for this team to get back on track toward our goal. I can’t wait to go out and take advantage of it!X
