It’s an honor to be nominated for Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, which recognizes not only playmaking on the field, but more importantly, work in the community. I’ve always wanted to make an impact on people’s lives in a positive way, and you really don’t know how you’re going to make that happen. It takes an amazing team, and I have that. I want to give them all the credit in the world. When you’re nominated for an award like this, it’s really not just you, it’s all the amazing people who have helped you along the way.
I started my foundation, Blanket Coverage, in 2013 with the goal of providing students in low-income communities with school supplies and clothing, as well as encouragement and one-on-one mentorship so that those kids can achieve their goals. I have lived first-hand what education can do for you. I have parents who instilled it in me, and they stayed on me and they stayed diligent about it, and I want to do everything in my power for the kids I meet and the kids I have a chance to reach out to and touch.
Each of us guys nominated for the award received a $5,000 donation to our charity, or charity of choice thanks to the NFL Foundation and Nationwide Insurance. For that, I’m very thankful, but what I’m even more excited about is the opportunity to raise additional funds for Blanket Coverage through the WPMOYChallenge. Through the month of December, the nominee whose personalized hashtag is used the most on social media will receive an additional $20,000 for their respective charity, courtesy of Nationwide.
This is where I need your support, 12s! You can help me win additional funds for, and drive needed attention to, my foundation Blanket Coverage by using #SHERMANWPMOYCHALLENGE on social media all month! At Blanket Coverage, we strive to improve inner city kids’ education and their well being overall. With your help I believe we can do that on an even bigger scale.
