Week 1 is Bigger than Football

The start of the NFL season always carries a lot of excitement and chatter from the outside with it. This week the chatter has swelled even more with everything that happened with Michael Bennett. People outside our team keep saying it is a distraction from what we are trying to do on the field.

I couldn’t disagree more. Our locker room has always supported our players and this situation with Mike is no different. This is about more than just football. Hopefully through this situation people will take action and fight against racism and unnecessary violence. The discussion of race has not been a distraction to our team because for many of us this has been something we’ve dealt with our whole lives.

Ultimately, we want to use our platform of being in the NFL to try to change society and bring people more equality. It is my prayer that society can get to a place where what happened to Mike is a rarity. I know there are a number of people that are outraged about what happened to him, but there are still so many others who are silently outraged. There are many ways to destroy racism and bigotry in our country, but I don’t think that silence is one of them. I don’t know exactly what steps we can take to stop racism in our country, but I’m going to do everything I can to make a positive impact.

Even though we have important matters like this, there is also some football to get to. We’re going into Week 1 for a game against the Packers in Lambeau. As long as I’ve been with Seattle, we haven’t beaten Green Bay. The last two times we’ve played them, we’ve been missing a starter in the defensive backfield. I’m excited that we’ll go up against them this week with all of our starters ready to go.

I can’t wait to be able to face Aaron Rodgers and play the chess match with him. He’s always fun to go against and he plays the game the right way. He has a ton of weapons like Cobb, Jordy, Davante Adams and Ty Montgomery in the backfield. It is going to be a fun challenge to go against these guys.

Our team is locked in. I know we are going to have a great game against the Packers. I’m ready for Sunday to get here. Hope to see some of you guys in Green Bay!
