It was probably just a matter of time before Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman became an in-demand commercial pitchman.
Sherman introduced himself to America with his nationally televised screed against San Francisco 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree following January’s NFC championship game, then helped the Seahawks’ elite defense crush the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII.
On Wednesday, Oberto announced a national ad campaign featuring Sherman to promote its natural, high-protein jerky line. One commercial features Sherman congratulating NFL Draft picks and another features him speaking with the voice in his stomach, played by ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith.
“I like what they stand for,” Sherman told USA TODAY Sports. “I like their slogan – ‘You get out what you put in.’ It’s pretty straightforward and it really applies to football and to what I’m about.
“I feel like if you work harder and put in the man hours, you put in the time and study, you’ll be successful. Hopefully, the young men in the draft, they’ve worked hard I’m sure, they’ve put in the time and they’ll reap the benefits I’m sure.”
Sherman had to wait awhile for his own name to be called three years ago. He was a fifth-round pick (154th overall) out of Stanford in the 2011 draft, which he watched from a suite in Las Vegas. Another video on Oberto’s website recalls the excruciating process.
“From the first day to the last day, there were a lot less people,” Sherman said.
He’s relatively reserved in the Oberto commercials but said that’s not necessarily by design. In a recent ad for the Swedish Cancer Institute, he reprised his postgame rant, talking about the cause.
“That’s the way they wanted me to attack it, and that was fine,” Sherman said. “But if it wasn’t for cancer and a good cause, I wouldn’t have done it.”
If he and the Seahawks keep playing like they did a year ago, odds are fans will be seeing a lot more of Sherman in the years to come.
