SEATTLE — KIRO 7 Eyewitness News will broadcast live coverage of the 3rd annual Richard Sherman Celebrity Softball Game benefiting Sherman’s family foundation, Blanket Coverage. The game will be broadcast Sunday, July 19 live from Safeco Field in Seattle.

“I’m incredibly excited. I never thought it would grow into what it is now.” Sherman told KIRO 7. “We had a humble beginning. We started at a 7,000 seat stadium out in Cheney [Stadium in Tacoma], and it’s grown so much. We never thought we’d be out at Safeco Field playing a softball game.”

Richard Sherman is a starting cornerback for the Seattle Seahawks. His leadership in the “Legion of Boom” led the Seahawks to two consecutive Super Bowls, winning the first Lombardi Trophy in franchise history in 2014.

More than 22,000 fans attended last year’s Celebrity Softball Game, which featured Kobe Bryant, Russell Wilson and Seattle rapper Macklemore. The event helped raise money for Blanket Coverage, which provides school supplies and clothing for underprivileged children, as well as several other local charities. To date, Blanket Coverage has provided school supplies and clothing for hundreds of students throughout the Pacific Northwest, Southern California and New York/New Jersey. Richard has also visited numerous schools speaking to students on the importance of education and setting and achieving goals. His mission is simple; to leave the world in a better place than when he entered it.

“It benefits a lot of kids and a lot of families in a positive way.” Sherman said. “We’ve seen immediate changes in kids. Improvements in grades, academics and behavior. It gives you a great feeling when you see kids improve.”

The celebrity lineup for this year’s game will be released soon. KIRO 7’s televised coverage will be led by KIRO 7 Anchor Steve Raible, who also serves as “Voice of the Seahawks” radio play-by-play announcer for the Seahawks Radio Network. Coverage will also be available worldwide via the live stream online and on mobile devices.
